I'll bite:

1) The slipping cam gear issue has happened on one vehicle and required a repair that took less than a day - meaning it did not cause any serious damage, if any. The design of the cam gear (e.g. without a key way) was pronounced to be a bad design on some of the Ram forums by those that do not have wide experience in diesel engines. A non-keyed cam gear is common design among modern diesels and tuning has not caused a difference in the slippage of this gear.

2) The output of the engine has very little impact on the stress of timing system. The greatest stresses on the timing system occur when the engine is accelerating and the camshaft is being pulled up to speed by the timing chain. If the engine is tuned then I guess the engine could accelerate quicker, but, there would be a very marginal difference.

HOWEVER

The output of the engine WILL have an impact on the cooling system. If you have a tuned Ram & are pulling heavy loads often this will add stress to the already weak oil cooler. Unlike the cam gear issue, oil cooler failure is happening often enough to be considered common. If your oil cooler was going to fail anyway, tuning the truck will accelerate this process.

As for the oil cooler upgrade cost? If your truck is under warranty you should be able to get the oil cooler replaced. This is so widespread that I believe there will be a recall - and if you have an aftermarket system installed you can kiss your warranty and warranty repair goodbye. Recalls often extend warranty past the normal time frame, so even if you are a bit out of warranty I'd wait. However, if you are way out of warranty and tow/haul often, an upgraded oil cooler is a good idea regardless.
