I run the ECO tune (in my 2007 KJ CRD Export Model), and just cleaned out my intake elbow, FCV etc and want it to stay clean. I have blocked off the EGR at the flange end of the short pipe running from the valve to the intake elbow (simply because this was the easiest way to do it while I was changing my glow plugs and cleaning the intake elbow). I had heard in the past that Export Models do not throw a CEL or code if EGR is blocked, and sure enough this seems to be the case because in a few days of driving with it blocked off nothing bad has happened.

What I have become concerned about in blocking it at that location is the loss of the overboost bleed off function in the GDE software (using the EGR valve to bleed the boost to protect the compressor). Would it be preferable to block the EGR gases at the exhaust manifold connection and reopen the short pipe to the valve to allow for the bleed function to take place; or can I simply put a blowoff valve on the intake elbow pipe connection (but how would I trigger it)?

Blocking the EGR system mechanically will negate the turbo overboost bleed function regardless if you block it near the intake manifold or next to exhaust manifold. The turbo bleed function is also part of the base software, we did not change this function. After an accel and then tip-out of the throttle you should be able to hear the turbo make a whoosh, whoosh, whoosh sort of sound. This is bad for turbo life. The sound will vary a bit depending on the rate of change in reducing the engine load.
